The transformation of Mbabane into a high-octane economic hub reached a critical milestone this week as the Municipal Council of Mbabane conducted a high-level guided tour of Dr. Sishayi Road—the designated precinct for the upcoming Made in Eswatini Consumer Fair on May 1, 2026.

Led by HRH Princess Sakhizwe (Patron of A Peculiar People) and the Minister for Housing and Urban Development, Appolo Maphalala, the tour served as an exclusive preview of a precinct being reimagined as a “well-curated superstore.” For Mbabane, this isn’t just an event; it is a strategic blueprint for urban economic revitalization.

A Vision Grounded in Action

Representing the Council, CEO Gciniwe Fakudze and His Worship the Mayor Thulani Mkhonto reaffirmed the city’s role as the primary catalyst for SME growth. The tour assessed technical readiness, ensuring that the infrastructure is prepared to host the kingdom’s largest platform for locally produced goods.

Minister Appolo Maphalala lauded the initiative, noting that the appointment of experienced local government practitioners into urban development is driving a new passion for transforming cities into vibrant trade hubs. He emphasized that the Consumer Fair is a critical launchpad for youth entrepreneurs to move from “theory” to “market entry.”

The “Choosing Local” Mandate

In a moving address, HRH Princess Sakhizwe linked the Fair’s success to the national reflection of His Majesty’s 40-year reign. She unveiled plans for a national “Choosing Local” multimedia campaign, designed to shatter myths around local products and highlight their quality, affordability, and true economic impact.

“The Made in Eswatini Consumer Fair is now the largest platform for locally produced goods in the kingdom,” the Princess noted, adding that merchant onboarding has already closed due to overwhelming demand—a testament to the “Hum” of the local creative economy.

The Source Verdict: Execution Over Theory

At The Source, we analyze the “Hum” of progress. The decision to hold this fair on May 1—a public holiday—is a masterstroke of economic strategy. By capturing the collective purchasing power of the workforce on their day of rest, the Council and its partners are maximizing turnover for MSMEs and ensuring that “Buy Local” moves from a slogan to a high-speed transaction.

Mbabane is no longer just a city; it is a curated marketplace for the nation’s future.
