In a significant stride toward inclusive education and economic self-reliance, the Deputy Prime Minister, Thulisile Dladla, has officially handed over prevocational training equipment valued at over E430,000 to Matsetsa School for the Deaf High.
The state-of-the-art machinery and materials, generously donated by the Turkish Government through the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA), are set to revolutionize practical skills development at the institution.
A Comprehensive Boost to Practical Skills
The specialized consignment includes an extensive array of resources designed to cater to diverse vocational pathways, spanning:
Advanced sewing kits and industrial sewing machines
Heavy-duty welding materials and tools
Professional upholstery equipment
High-quality art and design supplies
Dr. Nomsa Maseko explained that these critical resources will immediately enhance the pupils’ hands-on skills. In an innovative forward-looking project, Dr. Maseko revealed plans to utilize these materials to construct a mobile boutique, which will allow students to showcase and sell their manufactured products at various public festivals and sporting events.
“This will make it possible for the pupils to even start their businesses after completing school. We would like to request the public to support us as we will be selling our products,” Dr. Maseko stated.
Strategic Intervention and Agricultural Innovation
Expressing profound gratitude to the Turkish Government for its timely generosity, the Deputy Prime Minister noted that the intervention was born out of a previous oversight visit to the institution, where she personally identified the resource gaps and aggressively sought international funding to bridge them.
In a multi-sectoral boost to the school’s self-sustainability, the institution also received a dairy cow directly from the DPM’s Office. The livestock addition is dual-purpose: it will systematically produce enough milk to significantly improve daily student nutrition while simultaneously offering invaluable, hands-on practical training in dairy farming and agricultural management.
Securing Long-Term Futures
The DPM strongly encouraged the school’s administration to establish a robust follow-up framework to track and support graduates as they transition into the economy. Furthermore, she assured that if national budget provisions permit, the government intends to supply vocational start-up kits to graduating students to help them launch independent enterprises.
She closed with a strong appeal to the corporate sector and the general public to actively patronize the school’s commercial outputs.
“By investing in these learners, we are investing in their independence, dignity, and future contribution to the nation,” the Deputy Prime Minister emphasized.
Monitoring Special Education Infrastructure
Underscoring the government’s holistic approach to special education infrastructure, the DPM concluded her itinerary with a structural oversight visit to St. Joseph’s School. The delegation monitored the ongoing construction progress of the new boys’ hostel and formally assessed proposed structural sites earmarked for the upcoming construction of the girls’ hostel.
